This past Canada day celebrations on parliament hill Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a lovely speech in front of HRH Queen Elizabeth II part of which included telling Canadians that “We should be proud of our history and our heritage” when it went somewhat awry in the last part of his speech he stated “the steadfast determination and continental ambition of our French pioneers, who were the first to call themselves “Canadians”, the courage and vision of the British adventurers and loyalists, who brought with them our institutions and our freedoms under the crown, and of course, the faith of every immigrant man and woman, from every corner of the globe, who with the World to choose from, has declared “I Will be a Canadian”. They have made us all the true north strong and free“.
We at B&H Canada whole heartedly endorse the PM extolling of Canada’s European founding roots for without Europeans there would be no Canada let alone USA, Australia etc. What we disagree with adamantly is his remarks “Every immigrant man and woman from every corner of the globe who with the world to choose from has declared I Will BE A CANADIAN“!!!.
This shows how our “Leaders” really think of European people and true Canadians, harken back to the early days of Greece when the saying “One is born an Athenian - One does not become one". Would a European (White) be he Canadian, French, German or Norwegian say that he will become a Chinaman, Japanese or a Pakistani?. Would the people of those homogeneous countries accept that outsider as one of their own? NO!! There would be hysterical laughter and he would be told you are not one of us you are a white man (European).
